Gut Feeling: Staff Writers Discuss Where Team Must Improve After Bye

Marshawn Lynch Jerseys For the last time this calendar year, the Cowboys don’t have a regular-season game this week.
They head into the bye week 2-3, coming off two straight home losses by a combined 9 points. That’s the thin line between victory and defeat in a parity-driven NFL.
Where can the Cowboys improve most when they return to the field Oct. 22 at San Francisco? The staff debates:

Bryan Broaddus
Opponents are having alarming success running the

ball. It hasn’t mattered which down it has been – the inability for the defense to control that area has been a direct correlation in their losses. As a unit they’re not getting off blocks, and the overall tackling has been lacking any real consistency. As this point of the season, they’ve allowed 18 runs of 10 or more yards, which is five more than the league average. If they improve the run defense they play to their strength, which has been rushing the passer. If that doesn’t happen, there are going to be more of those types of games that we’ve seen against the Rams and Packers.

David Helman
I know the Dallas defense has been playing poorly, and I know they have a lot to work on. Believe me when I say I’m not trying to make excuses for them. But as far as I’m concerned, this team is only going to go as far as its offense can carry it. With that in mind, the Cowboys’ rushing attack just hasn’t been up to snuff compared to the dominant effort we saw last year. The Cowboys are just 10th in the league in rushing offense, averaging 124 yards per game — almost 30 yards fewer on average than last year. More troubling than that is that Ezekiel Elliott is averaging just 3.7 yards per carry, compared to his fantastic 5.1 from last season. The Cowboys haven’t been bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but they haven’t controlled the line of scrimmage the way we’ve become accustomed to seeing. Regardless of who’s playing, I don’t think this Dallas defense is good enough to keep the Cowboys in games if the offense isn’t consistently sustaining long drives and scoring points. Elliott and the offensive line are going to have to raise their game and find more yards on the ground if the Cowboys are going to get back to that.

Nick Eatman
While my first thought was to mention something about the offensive line or the lack of playmakers on offense, this team is scoring nearly 30 points per game in the last three Dak Prescott Jerseys weeks. That should be enough to be better than 1-2. So it has to be something defensively and to me, it’s the lack of turnovers. They just don’t get the football out and it’s a problem. And sometimes, when the ball is on the ground, like it was against the Rams early in the third quarter, the defense has to be ready to pounce. Through five games, this defense has forced only four turnovers in five games. Only five teams in the league have forced fewer turnovers, two of which have been on a bye week. This offense is still pretty good, but they could use a short field every now and then for some easy points. Nothing has been easy for this team this year, which is represented by its record. But the safeties need to make better Tom Brady Jerseys plays on the ball and get some picks. The pass rush needs to be even more consistent to either force errant throws or knock the ball loose on sacks and tackles for loss. And the linebackers have to see the ball better and react quicker, which can also lead to picks and fumbles. It’s not happening right now and if the Cowboys are going to turn this around, the defense needs to be a little more offensive when the ball is up for grabs.

Rob Phillips
I voted run defense in a similar poll on Talkin’ Cowboys this week, and I shared this stat in my Tuesday column: The Cowboys are 1-7 when allowing at least 160 rushing yards in a game since Rod Marinelli became defensive coordinator in 2014. They’re 0-3 in those games this year. Marinelli’s defenses pride themselves on stopping the run, first and foremost. Linebacker injuries have hurt them; they’ve been without Anthony Hitchens and/or Sean Lee in all five games. But this is a defense that didn’t allow a single 100-yard rusher last year. Sure, there have been personnel changes this year, but opponents’ rushing success is just out of character for Marinelli’s group. If they can get back to limiting yards there, they’ll get off the field more – and that means more chances for the offense to find and maintain a rhythm.

49ers attempting to extend contract of impending free agent Carlos Hyde

Men’s San Francisco 49ers Carlos Hyde Nike White Game Jersey

The 49ers have begun contract talks aimed at extending San Francisco 49ers Jerseys former second-round pick Carlos Hyde, league sources said, though that could prove to be a tricky proposition. The 2018 free-agent class of running backs appears pretty bleak, and it’s unlikely the team would pace the lucrative franchise tag on Hyde. Though oft-injured, Hyde is having what could be a true breakthrough season.

San Francisco selected Hyde 57th overall in 2014, and while he has missed games in all four of his NFL seasons, he has also showed signs of being an impact player when healthy. Hyde has missed two of the 49ers’ first four games this season, but in rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan’s proven run scheme, he has been a difference maker when the ball has been in his hands, racking up 169 yards on 24 carries (seven yards per attempt).

Finding a comparable player to Hyde in negotiations Carlos Hyde Jerseys could be tough, and Hyde missed 14 games due to injury in his first three seasons as well, making an assessment difficult. who did not draft Hyde but thinks highly of his ability, would like to extend his contract and has been making attempts to do as much.

Some might read it as attempting to buy low on Hyde, who has averaged a stout 4.5 yards per carry with 13 rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns in his career. Ultimately, it might be in Hyde’s best interest to gamble on himself and see how the season plays out. However, given his injury history and his missed time in 2017, it also may be difficult not to at least consider even a team-friendly deal.

While running back salaries have largely Wholesale Jerseys stagnated in recent years, Hyde could potentially benefit by being the best available back on the open market. The Steelers would likely put the franchise tag back on Le’Veon Bell, and Hyde, 27, could be the most attractive option for the limited number of teams that would seriously explore free agency over the draft for a running back.

Why the Chicago Cubs have Kyle Hendricks starting Game 1

Men's Chicago Cubs Anthony Rizzo Majestic Gray 2017 Memorial Day Authentic Collection Flex Base Player Jersey
Men’s Chicago Cubs Anthony Rizzo Majestic Gray 2017 Memorial Day Authentic Collection Flex Base Player Jersey

Anthony Rizzo Jerseys In late September of 2013, the Chicago Cubs brought a fresh-faced pitcher still working his way through Dartmouth to Wrigley Field to honor him as their minor-league pitcher of the year.

Just four years later, Kyle Hendricks has gone from an intriguing prospect to a Game 7 World Series starter and now a Game 1 starter in the National League division series.
The Cubs made it official Wednesday: Hendricks will start Game 1 of the NLDS in Washington on Friday followed by lefty Jon Lester in Game 2 on Saturday.

When the series comes to Wrigley Field on Monday, Jose Quintana will get the call in Game 3, and if there is a Game 4, the starter will be Jake Arrieta.

Manager Joe Maddon has talked up Hendricks for Tom Brady Jerseys the past two weeks, based on his performance since coming off the disabled list in late July.

“Obviously, Kyle has pitched really well,” Maddon said before the Cubs worked out at Wrigley Field and took off for Washington. “We wanted to pop him right there. We also know that the guys who pitch in the first two games can pitch in the fifth game. We thought putting ‘Q’ right in the middle was the right thing for him, also.”

Hendricks has no bigger backer than Lester, the ace of the Cubs’ staff and the man who relieved him in Game 7 of last year’s World Series.

“That’s kind of the evolution of the game and the evolution of him,” Lester said. “He’s done such a good job for us. He’s been consistent. Obviously, he deserves this. It’s a huge honor to pitch Game 1 of any series.

“I’m happy for him because this is kind of that next step. It’s a fun step to have. Hopefully the next step for him is to go through the whole playoffs like that and be our opening-day starter next year.”

For his part, Hendricks was his usual cool self about getting the news.

“It’s definitely an honor,” he said. “In some way, Marshawn Lynch Jerseys I’m going to take it that way. I’m just going to be excited to get out there, the energy that will be there in Game 1. Just go out there and try to pitch my game, make pitches, keep my team in the game, do what I do, treat it as any other game, really.”

Lester said Games 1 and 3 of a postseason series are the toughest for a starter because of all the pregame hoopla, with teams lining up on the field and other pregame ceremonies.

It has been an interesting season for the 27-year-old Hendricks, who won the major-league ERA title last year with a mark of 2.13.

He went on the disabled list June 8 with a hand ailment and didn’t return until July 24. At the time he went on the DL, he had an ERA of 4.09. After the all-star break, he posted an ERA of 2.09.

From Aug. 15-Sept. 23, he put up 8 straight quality starts. Even though his final start of the season was not technically a quality start, Hendricks pitched 5 shutout innings Sept. 28 at St. Louis.

“Obviously, he’s doing it in a different method or way,” Maddon said. “He’s not that guy who lights up the (radar) gun. He knows how to pitch.
You talk to a lot of different pitching coaches, a lot of different managers, even some GM’s I’ve spoken with, he’s their favorite, I think probably because of the style of his pitching and the ability to pitch — the fastball command, the movement on the fastball, the changeup.

“He’s just fun to watch man. He’s a technician, and what he’s done coming from Dartmouth to here, what he’s done for himself and his career, almost winning a Cy Young last year, being in the mix, really impressive.

“And even this year, I’ve said it before, I think he’s pitching better right now than I’ve seen him at any time last year. Why? Because the velocity is heavier. The velocity is better so the other pitches are working well off the greater velocity.

“So I think he’s at the top of his game right now.”

The Cubs obtained Hendricks in a July 2012 trade with Texas that sent veteran pitcher Ryan Dempster to the Rangers. Even team president Theo Epstein said he did not envision this.

“No, we certainly did not envision it at the time (of the trade),” Epstein said. “But he deserves a ton of credit for always growing. We did bet on his makeup. That was a primary driver in the trade. We were pretty convinced that he would always get the most out of what he had and continue to keep learning and adjusting.

“That part’s come true, but he’s taken it to another level with his understanding of the game and his ability to execute at a very high level on a consistent basis. It’s so impressive, and he’s unflappable.”

Hendricks said he has not reflected on the journey since that time.

“It’s been crazy,” he said. “I haven’t even really gotten to think about all of it. It’s kind of happened in a flash, for sure. You come in here and take every day as it’s presented to you.

“So I’m trying to just live in the moment and not really look back on it right now. Maybe when everything’s over and done with, you can look back at the path. But right now it’s just exciting to be able to pitch in these kinds of game for this kind of team, really.”

Jerry Rice apparently crashes weddings on the weekends after playing golf

Jerry Rice Jerseys is the best wide receiver in the history of the NFL.
His 1,549 receptions are 398 more than the next closest receiver (Larry Fitzgerald). His 22,895 receiving yards are 6,961 more than the next closest receiver (Terrell Owens). And his 197 receiving touchdowns are 41 more than the next closest receiver (Randy Moss).

But Rice has been retired since 2006. It has been 11 years. What’s he been doing since?
When Larkin and Matt got married last November in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, Matt was starting to get annoyed. Their reception was at a bar, and the bouncers had already approached him twice to ask if strangers were allowed to join the party.
“Then the guy at the door comes a third time and says, ‘You’ve got to come out again,’ and I’m saying, ‘Really?’ So I walked out with him and Jerry Rice is standing there saying, ‘Hey, I’m Jerry,'” Matt said.

Rice took about 20 minutes of photos before heading to the dance floor, where he performed a perfect knees-bent, swaying-side-to-side dance to “Blow the Whistle” by Too $hort. “It was surreal,” Matt said. “You’re thinking, ‘No one is going to believe this.'”

This story is (a) amazing; but (b) not the only one Wholesale Jerseys of its kind. Rice does this fairly often. “I’ve done it so many times,” he said. “It’s so exciting to see their reaction. It’s usually, ‘Oh my god, I never thought I’d run into Jerry Rice on my wedding day.'”

Snoring causes headaches, fatigue and health issues. This is an easy solution to what could be a serious problem.

Apparently, there are two kinds of weddings Rice crashes: ones where he steps off the golf course and walks into a venue that has a wedding, and ones where he’s on a business trip and walks into a venue that has a wedding. He said he actually knows the wedding schedule at his regular golf club, which is incredible.

Of course, because he’s Jerry Rice, he can’t exactly assume aliases and blend into the festivities, “Wedding Crashers”-style. If Jerry Rice walks up to your wedding and tells you his name is Seamus O’Toole or Bobby O’Shea, there’s no way everybody at the event is going to believe him. There’s always going to be somebody that recognizes the best receiver in NFL history.

“It only takes one person in the room San Francisco 49ers Jerseys who recognizes me for everything to click,” Rice said. “I’m a little hesitant because I never know what’s going to happen when I walk into the wedding. But usually there’s one person who says, ‘Oh my god,’ and I come over and start taking pictures.”

Rice posts a lot of pictures from the golf course on his Instagram feed, so if you’re getting married at a California country club with a golf course there, you’ve just got to do a little sleuthing on your wedding day to find out in advance of he’s going to crash the party. You don’t want to accidentally decline to let him into the party.

Tom Brady Jerseys New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was listed as questionable to play in Thursday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a thigh injury.

Gronkowski was limited in Wednesday’s practice after being a full participant in each of the previous two days for New England (2-2).
The 28-year-old leads the Patriots in receiving yards (318) to go along with his 20 catches and two touchdowns in four games.

Gronkowski played in all 70 of the team’s offensive snaps in a 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. He did not mention an injury when meeting with reporters on Tuesday.

“Just to prepare for a Thursday night game is totally New England Patriots Jerseys a lot different,” Gronkowski said of his preparation. “You’re on top of it right away. You’ve got to be on top of your body right away starting yesterday, maybe do some overtime extra stuff tonight but to be ready, to be prepared you’ve got to go full in this week. Then in the back of your head you’ve got some rest over the weekend.

“So just go full in getting ready for the game Thursday night and you’ll be good.”

Cornerback Eric Rowe (groin) and running back Rex Burkead
Marshawn Lynch Jerseys (ribs) have been ruled out for Thursday night’s game versus the Buccaneers (2-1).

Linebackers Dont’a Hightower (knee) and Elandon Roberts (ankle), cornerback Stephon Gilmore (ankle), special teams player Matthew Slater (hamstring), starting right tackle Marcus Cannon (ankle) and defensive back Brandon King (hamstring) are also questionable.

Baltimore Ravens running back Danny Woodhead Jerseys will miss at least four weeks with a hamstring injury, coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday that Woodhead’s recovery time will be closer to six to eight weeks.

Woodhead, who signed a three-year, $8.8 million contract (including $4.25 million guaranteed) this offseason with the Ravens, was injured on the team’s opening drive of the season Sunday. The 32-year-old running back fell to the ground holding his hamstring and had to be carted to the locker room.

“Danny looks like it’s going to be a while,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a hamstring. It’s a little unpredictable.”

Woodhead’s injury leaves the Ravens with two healthy running backs: Terrance West and Buck Allen.

The Ravens could decide to place Woodhead on injured reserve and bring him back around midseason as one of their two designated-for-return players.

Harbaugh wouldn’t rule out adding a running back from another team. Baltimore can also promote one of the two running backs from the practice squad: Jeremy Langford or Alex Collins.

“Those two guys have done a really good Cheap Jerseys Wholesale job at studying the offense and they’re healthy,” Harbaugh said. “Those are two very good options for us. We’ll see by the end of the week where we’re at running back.”

The Ravens were hoping Woodhead was going to be a catalyst for the NFL’s No. 21 scoring offense from a year ago, especially based on his only drive with Baltimore. In six snaps, he caught three passes for 33 yards (picking up first downs on each one) and ran the ball once for 4 yards.

This isn’t the first time Woodhead has dealt with this injury this year. He was sidelined for the last two preseason games because of an issue with his hamstring.

Staying healthy San Diego Chargers Jerseys has been a problem for Woodhead. He has missed 27 games over the previous three seasons. A torn ACL ended his season last year with the Chargers after two weeks.

He hadn’t caught a touchdown pass in nearly two years, so it’s a bit understandable that Keenan Allen jerseys was excited when he reeled in a 5-yard in route from Philip Rivers for a score late in the game in a 24-21 loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

Keenan Allen finished Monday’s game with five catches for 35 yards and a touchdown. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
Allen missed all but one half of football last year after suffering an ACL injury in the first half of his team’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The year before that, Allen suffered San Diego Chargers jerseys a lacerated kidney against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8, coming down hard on a 13-yard touchdown catch on Nov. 1, 2015 — his last touchdown reception before Monday.

At that time, Allen was on pace for a historic year, statistically. Through eight games, he had 67 receptions for 725 yards and four touchdowns.

On Monday against the Broncos, Allen received a penalty for taunting after he threw the ball toward cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who was covering him.

“I got in the end zone, and it was a great play, a great ball by Phil,” Allen said. “I thought it was a ticky-tack flag. He called some crazy stuff. But yeah, it was fun to get back into the end zone, and hopefully I can keep doing it.”

Allen finished the game with five discount jerseys catches for 35 yards on 10 targets. He played in 53 of the Chargers’ 59 snaps on offense.

However, the Cal product had an uncharacteristic two drops. According to ESPN Stats & Information, this was first time in his five-year career that Allen had multiple drops in one game.

Most important, Allen appeared to finish the game healthy and ready to play in his team’s first home contest at the StubHub Center against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot, making one or two bad plays every drive,” Allen said about his team’s struggles on offense against Denver. “Going backwards, or whatever the case may be, I’ve got to go back and watch, see what really happened on film so we can correct it.”

Chargers’ Antonio Gates Jerseys sits alone as TD leader among tight ends with 112

Los Angeles Chargers veteran tight end Antonio Gates eclipsed Tony Gonzalez and now stands alone as the touchdown leader among tight ends in NFL history.

The play that put Gates over the top occurred with 8:18 left in the third quarter and the Chargers tied at 10-all with the Miami Dolphins in the team’s home opener. The Dolphins won Sunday’s game 19-17.

On second-and-7 from Miami’s 7-yard line, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers found Gates on the duo’s bread-and-butter play — the option route — with Gates going up high to haul in the pass and raising his hands in the air in celebration as he came down with the completion.

Gates was mobbed by his teammates in the end zone.

With 112 touchdown catches, Gates sits alone at No. 6 on the all-time list, trailing only Jerry Rice (197), Randy Moss (156), Terrell Owens (153), Cris Carter (130) and Marvin Harrison (128).

“I’m just fortunate enough to be in a position Cheap Jerseys Wholesale to do certain things and surpass certain obstacles,” Gates said. “I mean, personally, I’m actually looking at the next guy. That’s just the way I am. ‘Who’s next? Marvin? How many does he got?’

“That’s just my competitive nature that I have. I’m always thinking about the next level, the next thing or the next improvement. I’m not stagnant. I’m not complacent.”

Rivers and Gates have connected on 85 touchdowns, the most between a quarterback and tight end in league history.

“He’s been awesome for so long,” Rivers said. “I’m just thankful that I could be a part in a lot of them — not all of them but a lot of them.”

Gates also made his 900th reception in the first half against Miami, becoming the third tight end in NFL history to hit the mark. Only Gonzalez and Jason Witten have more.

“I think he’s one of the best of all time,” said Anthony Lynn, the Chargers’ fourth head coach in Gates’ 15 NFL seasons. “He came into the league as an undrafted free agent and has accomplished all the things that he’s accomplished. To me, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I think he is the best. I was happy for him, but I wish we could have done it on a win.”

With Gates firmly in the record books, the San Diego Chargers Jerseys are free to concentrate on fixing a season that has begun with two narrow losses. That’s a hallmark of the recent Chargers, who have lost 11 games by eight points or fewer since the start of last season.

“I’m glad it was sooner than later,” Rivers said of Gates’ history-making catch. “I didn’t want the season to keep going and him to keep getting asked. Hopefully we can add to it now because he’s always been a big part of our red zone stuff, and he will continue to be.”

The Chargers changed cities for the 2017 NFL season. They didn’t change quarterbacks. But the quarterback didn’t change cities.

After 56 seasons in San Diego Chargers jerseys, the Chargers will play their first NFL regular-season game representing Los Angeles on Monday night when they visit the Denver Broncos.

Former Athens High School standout Philip Rivers will start his 177th consecutive game as the Chargers’ quarterback, the fourth-longest streak in NFL history.

Philip Rivers jerseys has been with the Chargers for 13 seasons, the past 11 as the starting QB. So when the team moved to Los Angeles in the offseason, he had the deepest roots in San Diego of any player on the team.

“If this was year five for me, we’d move,” Rivers told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “We’d want to stay in the same city, but I’d have a long way to go. … This is the home stretch. I could have five years. I’m only signed up for three.”

Rivers and his wife, Tiffany, have eight children, and uprooting their lives was paramount on their father’s mind. But so was putting everything he had into leading the Chargers.

He found the solution in commuting from his home in San Diego to the team’s facility in Costa Mesa, California, but in a way that allowed him to do the preparation required of a six-time Pro Bowl quarterback.

Rivers makes the commute in a van converted Wholesale Jerseys into a rolling film-study room by Becker Automotive Design in Oxnard, California. A 40-inch TV screen separates the front seat from the rear cabin, where Rivers and backup quarterback Kellen Clemens watch video on the commute, which Rivers said takes “an hour and 18 minutes.”

Jerome Bettis: Why Le’Veon Bell is ‘definitely worth the money’

Le’Veon Bell just received an endorsement from one of the greatest players in Steelers’ history.

In an interview with Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys Post-Gazette, Hall of Fame running back and Pittsburgh legend Jerome Bettis was asked if Bell is worth the money he is going to request when he becomes a free agent in 2018.

“Oh, he’s definitely worth the money,” Bettis said. “You have to look at it from a defensive perspective. And so here’s the question: Do defenses work to defend against him? For instance, when I was playing, defenses had to come into the game saying we’ve got to stop 36. All right? So with that comes value. So now defenses say, we’re willing to go one on one on the outside because we have to make sure we stop 36.

“Well, guess what? That takes a lot of pressure off your wide receivers and your quarterback. If you have a guy like Le’Veon Bell and Ben Roethlisberger, the question becomes as a defensive coordinator, who do I stop? Well, you’ve got to stop Le’Veon. Now I can’t double team Antonio Brown. Then you take him out of the backfield and now you get a different threat. Now I have to put somebody in there who can defend him. I can’t put a linebacker on him. So now you’ve stretched the defense even more, where now you put him in motion, who goes with him? Does that inside linebacker go with him? Now you create a mismatch with regular personnel and that’s rare.

“The value is there because of what he Jerome Bettis Jerseys has the ability to do, No. 1, and also what the defense has to do to defend against him.”

Jack Hame, a Hall of Fame linebacker during the Steelers’ dynasty years of the 1970s, pointed to Bell’s pass-catching ability when comparing him to Bell’s contemporary, the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott.

“Bell is the best route runner I have seen for a running back in a long time” and added Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys “can’t hold his jock as a receiver or route runner. Running a flare out of the backfield is not running a route. There’s a huge difference. Elliot is a flare guy, not a route runner.

“Bell understands this. He didn’t do that at Cheap Jerseys Wholesale Michigan State. They didn’t use him like that. Here they found out he was such a good receiver. It’s a big weapon when he’s in there.”

The team’s 2016 MVP, Bell turned down Pittsburgh’s reported offer of five years and just over $12 million a season. At the time, Bell said that he wanted to elevate the declining value of running backs by holding out for a better offer. Antonio Brown, the NFL’s best receiver, is slated to average $17 million a year over the next five seasons, and while Bell may not be asking to make the same amount as Brown, he certainly wants to be closer than the $12 million the Steelers offered him this summer.
